Example Therapy Interventions

The interventions below represent examples of the support we offer - with many more available.

Each is tailored to a client’s specific situation so if something additional or different is needed, further options are available.

Independent Living

Facilitating independent living is one of our core strengths. Our occupational therapists understand the implications of physical and neurological deficits on independent living skills and are able to design graded rehabilitation programmes that take into account our clients’ strengths and limitations, with a view to developing their skills over time through focussed intervention. We are also able, through detailed assessment and evaluation,  to identify and report on what support our clients might need in the short, medium and long term.

Fatigue Management

We are highly skilled in understanding and assessing cognitive and physical fatigue in our clients and are able to provide fatigue management programmes that dovetail with a client’s functional abilities and also have “real life” relevance to their daily occupations.

Assessment and Provision of Equipment

From standard grab rails to highly specialist and bespoke solutions, we identify equipment that truly supports each individual's rehabilitation. Through detailed activity analysis, we match the right equipment to a client’s progress and potential—working closely with statutory services,  when necessary, and specialist suppliers to ensure the most effective and cost-efficient solutions.

Wheelchair Assessment

Our therapists assess clients for appropriate wheelchairs and specialist mobility equipment, including terrain hoppers. Working collaboratively with clients and their carers, we develop the skills needed to use both manual and powered chairs safely and effectively. Since specialist seating is often crucial to wheelchair provision, we incorporate seating requirements into both the initial assessment and ongoing interventions to ensure optimal comfort, posture, and function.

Vocational Rehabilitation

Where possible, we support clients in returning to their previous work through graded vocational programmes and targeted assessments, including Job Demands Analysis. For clients who are unable to resume their former employment, we use tools such as Transferrable Skills Analysis, to help them identify meaningful new opportunities in both paid and voluntary work that align with their abilities and skills, and accommodate their challenges. For clients in the education system, we are well practised in utilising EHCP’s and college/university learning support plans.

Driving

Applying and obtaining a driving licence after illness or injury can be daunting. We support clients through the complexities of DVLA requirements, and offer further help by drawing on our established relationships with regional driving assessment centres and specialist driving instructors. Our comprehensive service includes pre-driving cognitive assessments such as the Rookwood Driving Battery and Trail Making Test, alongside practical preparation for road safety as both passengers and pedestrians. We also provide tailored strategies to help clients succeed in their theory and practical driving tests.

Vehicle Assessment

We help clients to find the best vehicle for their needs, ranging from standard models to specialised wheelchair-accessible vehicles, motorhomes and caravans. Our service often includes coordinated wheelchair assessments to ensure an optimal match between vehicle and user. We accompany clients to dealerships and arrange test drives, providing expert guidance to find the right solution, no matter how complex their requirements.

Property Searches

Once we have identified a client's immediate and long-term physical requirements, along with their preferred locations, we conduct a comprehensive property search across both sales and rental markets to pinpoint suitable housing options. We then facilitate viewings and accompany clients throughout the process to provide on-the-ground support and guidance.

Working with Architects and Builders

We serve as the vital link between clients, architects and builders, ensuring both immediate and future needs are seamlessly integrated into every project. This collaborative approach delivers optimal, cost-effective solutions tailored to each client's unique circumstances.

We understand that a home should reflect the person who lives there, not their disability. Our priority is creating accessible environments that feel naturally welcoming and contain spaces where adaptations enhance independence without compromising style or comfort. The result is a home that works well for its owner, both now and in the years to come.

The following relate specifically to hand and scar services:

Splinting

We use splints to support, protect or immobilise the hand and wrist. They can be custom-made from thermoplastics and neoprene materials or they may be prefabricated. Splints can be used to correct deformities, reduce pain, or promote healing and provide support to increase functional activity.

Strengthening

Exercises are provided to improve range of motion, strength and coordination. These can include active exercises (where the patient moves the joint themselves), passive exercises (where the therapist moves the joint) and resistive exercises (using resistance to build strength). Often these exercises progress to incorporate functional activities and confidence in abilities.

Joint Protection and Energy Conservation

Education and strategic action plans on how to protect joints during daily activities are crucial in hand therapy. For example, this may include guidance on modifying tasks to reduce strain on the hand and wrist, sometimes incorporating assistive equipment or aids. An important feature of our work is to recommend and train individuals in the use of adaptive equipment to compensate for limitations in hand function.

Scar Management and Sensory Re-education

These techniques help individuals regain sensation in the hand after nerve injury or surgery and reduce sensitivity to touch. This can be psychologically challenging and often joint work with other professionals is beneficial.
