Housing Adaptations and Equipment

Post injury, a client’s physical environment becomes incredibly important as either an enabler or obstacle in their rehabilitation and the quality of life that they can achieve. To support positive outcomes, the physical environment of the home, vehicle or workplace can be adapted - and this may well be in a life changing way. Similarly, the provision and use of appropriate equipment within the physical environment can be transformative.

Often a person’s adaptations and equipment will need to change as rehabilitation develops and abilities progress. Housing, adaptations and equipment OTs therefore work alongside rehabilitation professionals to assess, identify, procure and ultimately implement environmental and equipment solutions which help maximise a client’s ability to engage in daily life and regain occupations.

Our APPROACH

We have an experienced team of Housing Adaptations and Equipment OTs who undertake this specialised role with clients. These highly skilled practitioners regularly co-work cases with other Rehabilitate Therapy OTs to achieve a fuller, holistic approach to our therapy. The actions we take are always guided by the client goals and rehabilitation priorities, maximising safety, accessibility and functionality and they often focus on the obvious areas of home and work, but we also routinely focus upon vehicles, leisure/sport and holidays.

The assessment and provision of housing adaptations and equipment needs is a fundamental component of our work with each client at Rehabilitate Therapy. However, our expertise and success in this area enables us to provide a service that goes beyond ‘normal’ provision to, for example, work alongside architects on new builds or major adaptations, and on car purchases.

Example client goals requiring housing, adaptions and equipment:

(Please note these are just indicative areas - we do so much more...)

> Community access

> Return to driving

> Kitchen access

> Independent self-care

>  Vocational Rehabilitation

What people are saying about Rehabilitate Therapy

  • Emma ordered some special kitchen equipment and advised on specific accessories that I could use to help with my disabilities. This enabled me to be independent again, which made such a difference to my mental health. I could cook again with this special equipment and as a wife and mother, this made me feel ‘human’ again!

  • In conference last week, Counsel commented on the quality of the ILT summary  and referred ‘our’ Rehabilitation Consultant and Occupational Therapist to it. The client’s solicitor called it a ‘great document’. Tracy also produced it in very quick time and hit the deadline which was tight.
    Client’s Case Manager
  • I have a disability to my spine and lower legs now and over the years, I have developed Osteoarthritis as well as limited movement and weakness in my hands so when Emma first came to visit me for an OT Assessment, I honestly thought it would be a waste of time. How wrong I was! Emma ordered some special kitchen equipment and advised on specific accessories that I could use to help with my disabilities. This enabled me to be independent again (something I haven’t been able to do for a few years), which made such a difference to my mental health. I could cook and prepare dinner again with this special equipment and as a wife and mother, this made me feel ‘human’ again!
