Independent Living Trials (ILTs)
Independent Living Trials are a crucial step in a client’s rehabilitation journey - and done properly, can enable a client to make their way towards independence. With the client at the heart of everything, it brings together the family, the rehabilitation team, lawyers and insurers to work together to achieve the outcome everyone wants.
But while a successful ILT can be hugely positive, if it fails, this can be a significant setback in a client’s recovery pathway. It’s vital that everything is in place to ensure the client is given the best chance of success.
An ILT is about so much more than moving a person into their own property - it is a chance to evaluate their capabilities, establish their needs and determine next steps.
It is also very important for the client to learn about the progress they have made, and to see where they may need support going forward in achieving independence.
Getting it right is absolutely critical for the client - we want it to be empowering, not disillusioning, and to show them how far they have come.
Funding may not allow more than one attempt an at ILT, so getting it right first time is really important.
Teamwork and close collaboration are central to the success of an ILT - this can be the client’s chance to really achieve their ambition so we must all do everything we can to make this happen.
At Rehabilitate Therapy, we have decades of experience of running ILTs which enable clients to thrive.
‘Don't push too hard if the client isn't ready, step back and reflect on what is important to them. Learning lessons throughout the ILT is important for both client and professionals.’

Our CONFERENCE "ILTs - A Battle Worth Fighting For"
Our inaugural conference, in conjunction with ABI Solutions; " Independent Living Trials - A Battle Worth Fighting", was held on 10th March 2026 at The Royal Armouries in Leeds.
The day's speaker programme looked at ILTs from all perspectives; client, OT, Case Manager, both sides of the funding debate (insurers and claimants), SLTs and OTAs. We were delighted to have professionals from all these disciplines participate in an engaging and extremely well received day - as illustrated by the amazing delegate feedback .
" Inspirational. Nothing beats listening to a client lived experience "
" Lots of practical tips and considerations provided in an organised, systematic way "
" So helpful to see the litigation process explained and the different roles of the claimant and insurer solicitor "
" Found the Case Manager perspective really valuable and increased my knowledge and awareness for future ILTs "
" Really enjoyed this, a great idea to have a panel discussion and great way of gathering questions through the app "
" Good detailed overview of real life ILT process - challenges and working practices, MDT working/communication very helpful "
" Great to see how a creative approach can be applied to work away barriers to a "traditional" ILT to enable the client to experience an ILT as near as possible "
" I can honestly say this has been one of the best conferences I have attended. So much to reflect on and take away and put into practice. Thank you! "
