Ed's Groups
Ed is an occupational therapy graduate from Northumbria University and joined the Rehabilitate team in January 2022. He has since helped develop ‘Ed’s Groups – A Rehabilitation Conversation' working with clients as an Assistant Practitioner. Ed really enjoys working with clients to achieve their goals and has absolutely loved being a part of the wider online social rehabilitate team, organising client meet ups and facilitating projects where our amazing clients work together.
At Rehabilitate we know that our clients really appreciate the opportunity to share their own experiences with one another and ‘Ed’s Groups – A Rehabilitation Conversation’ are a series of groups that cover important topics for our clients and their rehabilitation journeys. These groups take a step away from a slideshow type of presentation and introduce a relaxed space where clients are encouraged to share their own personal experiences on the group topic. With smaller group sizes of 2-3 clients per session, we promote open conversation of all things rehabilitation. From struggles and challenges to easy to access strategies and tips for our clients to use.
There is lots of research that shows the considerable benefits of clients meeting clients and in a group format. For example Osborne et al's work (2008) shows that Discussion in groups, when compared to individual intervention, shows an improvement in behavioural competency and physiological well-being for individuals who experienced a TBI. Our clients at Rehabilitate Therapy appreciate and value the opportunity to connect with others with brain injuries and this feedback has spearheaded the need to create Ed’s Groups: a rehabilitation conversation.
These groups act as a useful opportunity for clients to use alongside an already comprehensive OT programme to strengthen and support their rehabilitation journeys. But importantly these groups create a relaxed judgement free space where clients can share their unique lived experiences, challenges and triumphs with others with the intention that through their engagement in the groups they feel supported as part of a wider community of clients and also inspired / more determined having engaged with people with similar experiences and challenges.
