housing, equipment and adaptations
Optimising a person’s environment is fundamental to being able to participate as fully as possible in the activities that are important to them, whether this is at work, at home or for leisure. We have a highly experienced team of Specialist Housing and Adaptation Occupational Therapists who undertake this specialised role with clients, and also more generally support the work of other occupational therapists with their clients housing, adaption, and equipment needs.
For clients, overcoming physical environmental barriers, through adaptations and the provision of equipment, is vital to their independence and ability to engage in desired occupations. We have specialists in this area and adopt a collaborative approach that is very person centred.architects, reviewing plans and advising on adaptations
We have vast experience working with, and acting as a conduit between, the client, architect and builders to ensure that the client’s short and long-term needs are addressed. This approach is critical to ensuring the best and most cost-effective solutions for the client. We recognise that many of our clients do not want their home to feel it has been adapted for a disabled person. Our priority is to create an accessible environment that reflects the individual rather than their disability.

assessment and provision of equipment
We have extensive knowledge of equipment, from more everyday grab rails to specialist and bespoke equipment. Our skills in activity analysis mean we can identify the correct equipment for that person, and at the right time given their rehabilitation progress and potential. We will liaise with various suppliers including statutory services, where appropriate, to ensure a cost-effective solution.
property searches
Including rental and purchase and reviewing suitability of any identified properties. Once we have identified the client’s short and long-term physical requirement as well as their preferences regarding the geographical area, we carry out a detailed property search of the sale and/or rental market to identify suitable housing options. We will also support the client by facilitating and attending viewings.
vehicle assessment
We are widely experienced in identifying suitable vehicles for our clients, from the most appropriate standard vehicles, to adapted wheelchair accessible vehicles, motor homes and caravans. This is often carried out in conjunction with wheelchair assessments to ensure the best fit. We will visit dealerships with clients and undertake test drives to best ensure the right solution, however complex their needs.
wheelchair assessment
Our therapists can assess for suitable wheelchairs and other transportation such as terrain hoppers. We work closely with the client and their carers in developing their skills in using both manual and powered chairs. Specialist seating can be crucial when prescribing a wheelchair and so any seating requirements will also be considered as part of the assessment and ongoing interventions.
